Artist Bio
Julika Pettigrew is a contemporary artist based in London, UK.
An interior architect by profession, her self-taught practice translates the architectural design elements of form, colour and light into expressionist abstract compositions.
Pettigrew uses a variety of media to create works with intricate textures, achieved by applying paint thickly with a scraper or trowel, scratching and indenting it, layered with fabric or paper collage.
Her tool kit comprises scrapers, as well as utensils and sheets of all sorts, for making marks and manipulating the paint surface.
These expressive textures provide backgrounding to carefully curated arrangements of organic, emotive shapes. Pettigrew often approaches compositions like a minimalist architectural layout, influenced by the designs of avant-garde modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
