Julika Pettigrew (b.1977, Germany ) is a contemporary artist living and working in London, UK. She brings her architecture background in to the canvas - where structure meets spontaneity. Her bold abstract compositions play with the tension between clean, architectural forms and the raw beauty of organic expression.
Not just "making art," but archiving the very process of living by layering forms and marks. The work sits at that beautiful, tension-filled intersection of composition and emotion.
My art practice has a basis in deep introspection (following a life-changing post natal mental health challenge in 2019). I am drawn to the theme of dualities in life. My art is a reconciliation of contrasting emotions, a celebration of being ‘Both and And’: the language of visual differences I use in my work, like controlled shapes in contrast with intuitive marks, stands for inner landscapes where all our emotions and facets are equally valid. I build surfaces layer by layer - scraping, scarring, and redefining - much like the way our experiences shape us.
Emerging from my architecture background, each of my pieces is a balanced space for contemplation - controlled at first glance, but full of details that reward sustained looking.
Being a self-taught artist, I have been making abstract art consistently since 2024, rarely using a brush and always striving to expand my repertoire of tools and application techniques to create captivating textures and emotional depth.
My paintings are in private collections in the UK and Europe, and I am represented by Kellart Gallery.

Inspiration & Influence
My inspiration comes from visual impressions of shapes, composition and colour that I collect while engaging in every day life, moving through built or natural environments. These impressions create a library of ideas in my mind, which I draw from to explore the relationship of shapes, marks, textures and colours in my compositions.
I have always admired the minimalistic, open floor plans created by pioneer Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe.
Grounded balance & Invigorating playfulness
A personal example of Duality: I grew up in the countryside and now I live in the big smoke. Therefore, while I strive to create compositions that exude order and balance, inspired by the structures of city life, I feel compelled to add elements of surprise and freedom in the form of unexpected collages, expressive mark-making and invigorating colour interactions, expressing the yearning for the freedom and expanse experienced in nature.
My Process
I work primarily with acrylic paint on canvas, utilising scrapers as the first tool of choice. My process involves multiple layers of scrapes and marks made with various objects and utensils. The initial stages are experimental, intuitive and expressive, and result in detailed texture. Later, I curate the composition of shapes with more layers of paint or collage. Finishing touches - applying paint, pastels and/or dry pigments - ensure I am satisfied with the play of colour, light and dark in the right places, and with the level of detail that lets the viewer discover something new every time they look closely at the artwork.
Life Before Fine Art
I studied interior architecture at an architecture faculty in Germany. Before I enrolled, I completed a year-long vocational course in joinery.
After I finished uni, I moved to London to start work in a firm of architects. I loved creating spaces for people to learn and work. My favourite part was choosing interesting materials for the interior finishes.
After my first child was born, however, I ended up giving up work - before the pandemic, aspects like flexibility and working from home were not available.
My second child now in school allows me to dedicate significant time to my art practice.
