Artist Statement - Memory
Work at the intersection of architectural composition and resonant emotion
My art practice has a basis in deep introspection (following a life-changing post natal mental health challenge). I build surfaces layer by layer - much like the way our experiences shape us. Scraping, scarring, and redefining - reflecting how memory works - the past layers shaping the new ones. My art is a reconciliation of contrasting emotions, a celebration of being ‘Both and And’: the language of visual differences I use in my work, like controlled shapes in contrast with intuitive marks, stands for inner landscapes where all our emotions and facets are equally valid.
For the viewer, my pieces are balanced compositions: a space for contemplation - controlled at first glance, but full of details that reward sustained looking.
I work primarily with acrylic paint, building multiple layers and texture with scrapers and random objects and paper or textile collage.
The initial stages are intuitive and expressive. Later, I curate the composition of form and light.
What excites me is to create a variety of finishes, surfaces and edges: rough and smooth, clean or feathered.
A place for the eye and mind to rest, but never get tired of.
